Using Thoth.
Record your first guide, understand how licenses and computers work, and fix the problems people run into most.
Get started
- 1
Download and install
Download Thoth for Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and open the installer. It installs for your user only, so no administrator rights are needed. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, see the first item under Troubleshooting.
- 2
Record a guide
Open Thoth, choose what to capture (the full screen, one window or a region you draw) and press Start capturing, or press Ctrl+Alt+R. Do the task the way you normally would. Every click takes a screenshot and becomes a step named after the control you clicked. Press Ctrl+Alt+R again to stop. Ctrl+Alt+P pauses, and Ctrl+Alt+C takes a screenshot without a click. You can change every shortcut under Settings → Hotkeys.
- 3
Tidy it up
Edit the titles and descriptions, put steps in a better order, and mark up screenshots with arrows, callouts and blur. Anything private can be blurred, and Pro finds emails, card numbers and keys for you. Nothing leaves your PC while you edit.
- 4
Share it
Export to PDF, Markdown, JSON or images for free. Pro adds Word, PowerPoint, HTML, GIF, video and an interactive demo, and publishing to NinjaOne, Confluence, Notion and WordPress. You can also publish to a help center hosted for you on thothdocs.com: one is included free.
- 5
Optionally, sign in
Thoth works fully without an account. An account is for what lives online: help centers, Pro, cloud backup and sync, and teams. In Thoth, open Settings → Cloud and choose Sign in with Thoth. Your browser opens, you choose Connect, and you’re back in the app.
Need the installer? Download Thoth. Rolling it out to many computers? See Deploy to many computers.
Licenses and computers
Pro is unlocked by a license key or by your Thoth account. A license can be on up to three computers at a time.
01Do I need an account to use Thoth?
No. Recording, editing and exporting all work without one, offline. An account is only for the online extras: help centers, Pro, cloud backup and sync, and teams.
02How do I turn on Pro?
Two ways, and either is fine. Sign in to Thoth with the account that has Pro (Settings → Plan & license → Sign in with Thoth), and Pro turns on with nothing to copy. Or paste a license key into the same page and choose Activate. A key from a purchase is on your account page and in your email.
03How many computers can I use Pro on?
Three at a time. A license counts the computers it’s active on, so a key (or an account’s license) can be on up to three. On a team, each person who is given a license gets three of their own.
04It says my license is already in use on three computers. What do I do?
Open your account page at my.usethoth.app and look under Your computers. Remove a computer you no longer use, then try again in Thoth. A computer you haven’t used for 30 days stops counting by itself. If you can’t reach your old computers, contact support and we can free the places.
05Does Pro work offline?
Yes. A key is checked on your computer, so Pro keeps working without a connection until the key ends. When Thoth is online it checks in about once a day: it picks up a renewed key, and counts the computer. A key from a subscription lasts until your paid period ends plus two weeks. The key an account gives the app lasts about a week and is renewed daily.
06How do teams get licenses?
A team’s admin gives each person a license on the website (the Team page). Each person signs in to Thoth with their own account and Pro turns on. If the admin takes a license back, or the person leaves the team, Pro ends on their computers within a week.
07How do I move Thoth to a new computer?
Install Thoth on the new one and sign in, or paste your key. Then remove the old computer under Your computers on your account page. Your guides don’t travel by themselves: restore a backup, or use cloud backup or sync on Pro.
08What happens if my subscription ends?
Pro features turn off once the key runs out (your paid period plus two weeks). Your guides stay on your PC and everything on the Free plan keeps working. Cloud copies and help centers follow the Free plan’s limits.
09I lost my license key.
It’s on your account page at my.usethoth.app. If you were given a key by someone else, ask them for it again, or contact support.
Troubleshooting
01“Windows protected your PC” appears when I run the installer.
That’s Windows SmartScreen, which warns about installers it hasn’t seen many times and that aren’t signed with a publisher certificate. Thoth isn’t signed yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Only do that for a copy downloaded from usethoth.app: its checksum (SHA-512, in base64) is published at downloads.usethoth.app/latest.yml so you can compare.
02My antivirus blocks or removes Thoth.
Thoth watches your clicks in every program, so it knows which control you clicked, and takes screenshots. Some security tools treat that as suspicious, most often for new programs that aren’t signed. It never logs keystrokes or reads password fields. Allow the Thoth program folder and its data folder (%APPDATA%\Thoth) in your security tool. IT teams that need a hash or a vendor submission can ask support.
03Clicks in one program aren’t recorded.
Windows doesn’t let a normal program see clicks in a program running as administrator. Run Thoth as administrator for those (right-click Thoth, then Run as administrator). Windows’ own secure screens (the sign-in screen and permission prompts) can’t be captured at all.
04A screenshot is black or empty.
Some windows block screenshots, such as protected video and a few programs that draw with the graphics card directly. Capture the full screen or draw a region instead of capturing the window.
05The recording shortcuts do nothing.
Another program is probably using the same keys. Change them under Settings → Hotkeys. Ctrl+Alt+R starts and stops by default.
06I pasted a license key and Pro didn’t turn on.
Copy the whole key (it starts with CT1-). If it says it expired or isn’t valid, the key is old or incomplete. If it says the license is already in use on three computers, see the licenses section above. If you were given the key by someone, ask them to check that it hasn’t been revoked.
07Pro turned off by itself, with a message.
Thoth tells you why, on Settings → Plan & license. The usual reasons are that the license is already on three computers, or that it was taken back by your team’s admin or revoked. The message names what to do.
08Sign in with Thoth doesn’t open my browser, or doesn’t finish.
It opens your default browser. Check that one is set, and that you choose Connect on the page that opens. If your computer’s security software blocks the short-lived local connection the sign-in comes back to, use Settings → Integrations → Use a token instead: create a token under Help centers on your account page and paste it.
09Where does Thoth keep my guides? Can I back them up?
On your PC, in %APPDATA%\Thoth. Uninstalling Thoth leaves them there, so reinstalling finds them. Settings → Backups makes backups of the whole library, and on Pro it can also keep encrypted copies in the cloud.
10How do I update Thoth, or stop it updating?
It checks for updates by itself and installs them when you restart. Settings → Data & about has a Check for updates button. Organizations that push updates themselves can turn this off for every computer (see Deploy to many computers).
