While you record, Thoth asks Windows what you clicked: the button, field or menu item and its name. That name goes into the step title, so a step says Click “Save” and not Click here. Most apps report their controls to Windows. Some draw their own, and for those Thoth falls back to a plain title you can fix in a second (see remote sessions and unusual apps).
The default titles#
| What happened | Title | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A click on a control Thoth recognizes | Click "[[element-name]]" | Click “Add user” |
| A click it can’t name | Click here | Click here |
| Typing in a named field | Type "[[text]]" in "[[element-name]]" | Type “Dana Reyes” in “Display name” |
| Typing in a field with no name | Type "[[text]]" | Type “Dana Reyes” |
| Typing in a password field | Enter your password in "[[element-name]]" | Enter your password in “Password” |
You can change any of these under Settings → Capturing → Automatic step titles and Typing. Use [[element-name]] for the control’s name and [[text]] for what was typed. New steps use your wording from then on; steps you already recorded keep theirs.
How typing becomes a step#
Text you type into a field becomes a Type step when you press Enter or Tab, or click somewhere else. The step’s screenshot shows the field after you typed. Thoth reads the field’s contents through Windows, not your keystrokes: the keyboard hook only notes that a text key was pressed. No raw keystroke log is kept.
To turn typing steps off completely, switch off Record typing as steps under Settings → Capturing → Typing. Typing is then ignored and only your clicks are recorded.
What else a step remembers#
Remember app and page address (Settings → Privacy → Step details, on by default) saves which app each step happened in and, in a browser, which page. Guide Me uses it to find the right window, and the AI step writer uses it for context. Turn it off if you don’t want app names and addresses stored in your guides.
Fix a title faster#
- While recording, edit the latest step’s title right on the control bar.
- In the editor, click a title and type. The outline on the left follows.
- With an AI provider connected, AI → Write step titles and descriptions… rewrites them from the screenshots. See Use AI to write and improve steps.
- To change a word everywhere, use Find and replace, Ctrl+H.
