Sometimes a short video is the right answer, and Thoth records one without a separate tool. It is a different feature from capturing a guide: it records moving pictures into an MP4 you save wherever you want. To make a video out of a guide’s steps instead, see Export a guide as a GIF or a video.
- 1
Open Record a video
Choose Record a video in the library’s left sidebar.
- 2
Choose what to record
The Screens tab lists your monitors and the Windows tab lists open windows. Pick one. Turn on Record microphone if you want your voice on it.
- 3
Record
After a three-second countdown it records. You can pause, resume and stop. You can also minimize Thoth and come back to it from the taskbar to pause or stop.
- 4
Preview and save
When you stop, Thoth shows the video. Give it a name, then choose Save and pick where to put the MP4. The video stays on your computer until you save it.
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Quality | Up to 1080p at 30 frames per second, H.264 video and AAC sound, in an MP4. |
| Length | A recording can be up to 2 GB. |
| Cost | Part of Free. |
| At the same time as a guide | Not possible. Finish capturing a guide first, and Thoth won’t start a capture while a video is recording. |
| Each recording | Asks you to choose the screen or window again, so a video never records something you didn’t just pick. |
If Thoth closes mid-recording#
Thoth keeps the video recorded so far. The next time you open Record a video, it offers Recover video or Discard draft. A draft is kept for 7 days, and the last few seconds before an interruption may be missing. Only one unsaved recording is kept at a time, so save or discard it before you start another.
