Your library is on your PC, so a backup is what protects it from a lost laptop or a dead disk. Thoth makes them for you.
Automatic backups#
Open Settings → Backups. Back up automatically is on by default and runs while Thoth is open: by default once a day, keeping the newest 10. Change How often and Keep, or use Change… next to Backup folder to send them to a drive or a network share (Use default goes back). Back up now makes one on demand. Backups you make yourself stay until you delete them; only the automatic ones are rotated.
Each backup is a ZIP of the whole library: a copy of the database and every guide’s screenshots.
Restore#
- Restore guides… on a backup in the list opens it and lets you pick guides to bring back. Nothing else changes.
- Restore everything… replaces the library. It runs when Thoth next starts, and your current data is kept beside it in
data-before-restore. - Open a backup file… reads a backup from anywhere, such as a copy on another PC.
Move to a new computer#
- 1
Make a backup
On the old PC, choose Back up now and copy the ZIP somewhere you can reach from the new one.
- 2
Install Thoth on the new PC
See Install Thoth.
- 3
Bring the guides over
On the new PC open Settings → Backups → Open a backup file… and restore everything, or pick the guides you want.
- 4
Turn on Pro
Sign in with your Thoth account, or paste your key. Then free the old computer under Your computers on your account page. See Licenses and computers.
Send a few guides to someone#
Tick guides in the library and choose Share as file to save them as .thoth files. The other person chooses Import → Guide files in their library. Import recognizes a guide it has seen before, so importing again doesn’t duplicate it.
