Branching steps: “if you see this, go there”
Let a step send the reader to a different step depending on what they see, in documents, demos and Guide Me.

A straight list of steps suits most tasks. When the next step depends on what the reader sees, such as an error banner or a locked account, add a choice and send them to the right place.
- 1
Add a choice
Choose ••• on the step, then Add a choice (if… go to). A Choose your path box appears under the step.
- 2
Write the condition
Complete the sentence “If … go to …”. Write what the reader sees:
you see a red error banner. If you type “If” yourself, Thoth doesn’t double it. - 3
Pick where it goes
Choose any other step, or The end (done). Add more choices for more outcomes, and remove one with the ✕.
How choices show up#
| Where | What the reader sees |
|---|---|
| PDF, Word, web page, Markdown | A sentence under the step: “If you see a red error banner, go to step 7: Check the connection.” |
| Interactive demo | Buttons that jump to the step. Back follows the path the reader took. |
| Guide Me | The same buttons on the live overlay. |
