On this page
Thoth is a Windows app. It installs for your user only, so you don’t need administrator rights, and it works without an account.
What you need#
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. |
| Screens | One or several monitors, at any display scaling. Thoth captures in real pixels. |
| Account | None to record, edit and export. An account is for help centers, Pro, backup and sync, and teams. |
| Internet | Only for the optional parts: signing in, publishing, AI providers, update checks and sending a support report. |
Install it#
- 1
Download the installer
Get Thoth from the download page. Only use a copy from usethoth.app.
- 2
Run it
Open the installer and follow the prompts. You can choose the folder to install into, and it adds a desktop shortcut.
If Windows shows Windows protected your PC, that is SmartScreen warning about an installer it hasn’t seen many times. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Do that only for a copy you downloaded from usethoth.app, and compare its checksum (see below).
- 3
Open Thoth
The first time, the library is empty and offers Create your first guide and Explore a sample guide. The sample is a finished guide you can click around in. If Folge is installed on the same PC, you also get a button to bring those guides over.
Check the download#
The checksum of the latest installer (SHA-512, in base64) is published at downloads.usethoth.app/latest.yml. To compare it, run this in PowerShell, with the file name of the installer you downloaded, and match the result to the sha512 line in that file.
$bytes = [IO.File]::ReadAllBytes("$HOME\Downloads\Thoth-Setup-1.0.0.exe")
[Convert]::ToBase64String([Security.Cryptography.SHA512]::HashData($bytes))Updates#
Thoth checks for updates by itself and installs them when you restart it. Settings → Data & about has a Check for updates button. Organizations that push updates themselves can turn this off on every computer: see Deploy to many computers.
